Making things v. making grades

Kids, when they make [things], are actually preparing themselves better for the jobs they’ll have in the future than [they are by] getting straight A's.

If the students are making their 20th poster for the year, is that poster still "demonstrating learning"?

Or what about primary students (1st-3rd grade) making an "arts-craftsy project during literacy time that involves no reading, writing, or following directions (just quiet work)?

Fran, did you even read the article. This isn't about posters or even artsy-craftsy projects (though I can't imagine why that would be a problem). Maker Faire is really about creative engineering, learning physics hands on and using tools rather than being passive consumers.

I am terrified of the 'maker faire'/creative engineering academic culture recommendations. I would rather study and get grades than -do- things. I guess some people are wired the way I am. I am glad I am not a student and out of school.
