10 things teachers should unlearn

10 things I think teachers should unlearn…

1. Teachers know all the answers.

2. Teachers have to be in control of the class.

3. Teachers are responsible for the learning.

4.  Students are obliged to respect teachers.

5.  Learning can be measured by a letter or a number.

6.  Teachers should plan activities and then assessments.

7. Learners need to sit quietly and listen.

8. Technology integration is optional.

9.  Worksheets support learning.

10.  Homework is an essential part of learning.

Great list. I agree with all - with a disclaimer on #9. Some worksheets can be fabulous - they just need to facilitate engagement and thinking outside the box.

Very insightful, though I will say on #2 that as a kid, I learned very little in classes that were out-of-control.

I think this is a great list for teachers, with the exception of #4. I get what you are saying here. But I do think students should have respect for their teachers AND teachers should have just as much respect for their students. It just makes it a better environment. Even in times of great disagreements, if people had more respect for each other, more would be accomplished. Hence, our politicians should practice this. Oh, and by the way, I teach kindergarten.

Ok - Its been bugging me all day. I don't agree with #4. Yes, teachers need to work to earn respect. But if we are to get a better place in our schools, we need to get back to the point where teachers are respected due to their position. Too many teachers lack respect from their students from the get go and this creates an environment that is not conducive to learning. Parents, teach your children to respect their elders and especially those who are dedicating their life to serve!

OK I feel better now.

Every human being deserves respect. It's up to the individual to behave in a way that maintains that respect.

It's my list :) Thanks for sharing it further, Scott!
I'm happy to defend my points, but you can see the discussion already happening in the comments here http://bit.ly/ae9HGD

Agree so much about the worksheets, but feel about #4 that mutual respect has to begin from an assumption that it exists - and then everyone, pupils and teacher, has to work to maintain it. Otherwise everyone might as well give up and go home.
